Zoori for me is simply an inspiration to participate in the healing process of the earth and the human being. We can clearly see today, now, through the internet and in our own lives that the world is not what we once believed it to be, or imagined it to be. The world seems to be trapped in a repetitive recycling of history with all of it’s injustice and suffering. Through my eyes it is clear that there is no other choice at the moment, and out of necessity, we need to begin the change from an existence of competition to an existence of cooperation, and sharing and that is what the Zoori project is.

Through the inspiration of Zoori, an ancient technology and art form of traditional Japanese farmers, we would like to be an instrument for the revitalization and facilitation of the creative nature inherent in children who have experienced deep trauma, pain, humiliation, fear through war and disease, in order to reawaken in them there natural right, to create unconditionally, and to share those creations in order to build a self sustainable community.

Through the art of sharing and creativity we will learn new things together, build on those new things together, learn about relationships together, discover solutions to obstacles that arise together, and ultimately stand by each other together. So we begin Zoori as a movement of cooperation, a movement of a few human beings together learning about each other through sharing, and about how to bring the reality of sharing to our brothers and sisters in other parts of the world. Together we are spreading the message of sharing through the honest language of action.

For me, Zoori is simply an idea that extends itself into the global arena as an instrument for healing the human who has been severely exposed to the forlorn revelry of a cruel world. We can observe through our computer screens that the world is not what we once believed it to be as a wide eyed child, nor what we once wanted to believe it was as we grew up. So for me it is clear that there is no other choice at the moment, and out of necessity, we need to begin the change from an existence of competition into an existence of cooperation, and sharing is what the idea of Zoori is at its core. Through the art of sharing we will begin to learn new things together, build on those new things together, learn about relationships together, discover problem solving together, and stand by each other, together. So we begin Zoori as cooperation, a movement of family and friends, together learning about each other through sharing, and extending the reality and truth of sharing to wherever it’s needed, spreading the message of sharing through the honest language of creative action.

It was my trip 8 years ago to Buenos Aires that began my interest into the realm of sharing amidst a world fuelled by a fierce competitive energy. On my daily trips through one of the many city parks, I encountered numerous so called street kids who always asked me for money. I gave it to them freely, every time, and every time everyone stopped me to tell me that this was not a good idea and that I shouldn’t do this anymore, and I always asked them why, and they would begin to explain that it would only thirst there appetite for more easy money, and that they would become dependent on this form of making money. At first, I could not understand this at all, how can I ignore street kids who are hungry and have no parents for security? So for me, someone who had more money than they did, I thought I should have given it to them and I wouldn’t ignore them. In a span of 3 months, I developed an interesting friendship with the children. Instead of just giving them money, and since my intention in Buenos Aires was to learn Spanish, I started learning Spanish from them, as an alternative to going to a Spanish language school. Suddenly, the final day in Buenos Aires arrived which brought with it sudden emotions of guilt within me. I thought, “I am going back to Japan, where I will lots of food, and I will meet my family, but for them, nothing will remain, except for their hustle to survive,” and I remember that along with my emotion of guilt, I started to feel a strong sense of shame within me. “The only thing I could give them was just money for the moment, but nothing for their future,” I quietly thought as I left Buenos Aires. An anger remained, the anger that I could not do anything for them, and the anger at the way we live with greed and selfishness.

So when a few years later I was presented with an interesting prospect, I began to properly think. The vision was to help Orphaned children from War and HIV in Uganda. Out of the many struggles confronting them every day, one of them happened to be that they didn’t have any footwear to get around, and that they were capturing illnesses from being barefoot. The man who presented this vision was David Kabuki who is building an art school with the message of healing through creativity and Ingenuity, through art. And I began to remember my relationship with the children in Buenos Aires followed by the rememberance of an old Ancient Japanese Sandal.

This old Ancient Japanese Sandal, better know as Zori, came from the farming class of the Heian period (794-1185), and was initially made out of straw which would eventually evolve into the other more commercial forms that we see today in the common sandal. I realized that we could use this ancient technology today in an ecological manner by using reusable material to construct it. The Zoori would be creatively constructed through different types of reusable material as well as different colors and styles. The constructions of the sandals are easy and it could therefore be easily taught and easily learned and captured by any child, anywhere. And, through the art of sharing, these orphaned children would receive a new skill that would shake up their dormant creative brain waves which have been shut down through madness, trauma, fear and humiliation. We would both be empowered by the sharing exercise physically, emotionally, creatively, personally, and spiritually. Ultimately we both would be enriched through this sharing, and this will invite others to participate in the sharing. We would begin to see the sharing of fabrics and materials, creative ideas, personal experiences, etc. etc. and through this sharing, through this healing; we will begin to re-awaken the energy of humanity, the energy of trust. The energy of trust will begin to spread rapidly since it now is the only way that we will ever survive. But out of this new form of survival, we will discover sanity again, we will discover health again with new sane technologies, and we will begin to behold the flourishing of the next way, which is the only way. Everyone together, sharing together. One.

We, Zoori, would like to be an instrument for revitalizing and facilitating the creative nature of children who have experienced deep trauma, pain, humiliation, and fear through war and disease, in order to reawaken in them there natural right, to create unconditionally, and to share those creations in order to build a self sustainable community.
